MINNEAPOLIS – The third season for Minnesota women’s basketball under head coach Lindsay Whalen begins Dec. 2 and features 22 regular season games, including 20 Big Ten contests, it was announced Monday.
Tipoff times and TV/streaming coverage will be announced at later dates.
Based on recommendations from local health officials and guidelines in place on the state and local levels, there will be a drastic reduction in the number of spectators permitted to attend Gopher sporting events. Current guidelines from the Minnesota Department of Health specify that venues are required to be closed to members of the public.
The 2020-21 season for the Golden Gophers gets underway on Wednesday, Dec. 2 with a home contest against Eastern Illinois at 11 a.m. The matchup against the Panthers will be one of two non-conference games for Minnesota this year. The other comes on Dec. 6 against Drake at 2 p.m.
Big Ten play starts for Minnesota on Wednesday, Dec. 9 as the Golden Gophers host Michigan State, while the Big Ten road opener comes Dec. 14 at Northwestern. Minnesota closes out the month of December by hosting the league’s preseason favorite, Indiana, on Dec. 23.
The new year begins with a pair of road games at Wisconsin on Jan. 3 and at Iowa on Jan. 6. Minnesota follows that with back-to-back home games versus Penn State on Jan. 10 and Maryland on Jan. 14. Another two-game road swing includes stops at Nebraska (Jan. 19) and Penn State (Jan. 25) before two straight at Williams Arena against Purdue (Jan. 28) and Iowa (Jan. 31) wraps up the month.
February begins like January with two consecutive road games, this time at Michigan (Feb. 4) and Ohio State (Feb. 7). Illinois and Wisconsin then come to Minneapolis for contests on Feb. 10 and Feb. 14, respectively. A trip to the East Coast sends the Gophers to Rutgers (Feb. 17) and Maryland (20), while the month ends with a pair of home games. Nebraska visits on Feb. 24, while the final home game of the regular season is scheduled for Feb. 28 against Michigan.
The regular season concludes with a road duel at Illinois on either March 5 or March 6.
The Big Ten Women’s Basketball Tournament will be held in Indianapolis at Bankers Life Fieldhouse, March 9-13.
