The Washington Football Team doesn’t have a clear answer under center for 2021 and beyond. There are three trades they can explore to upgrade under center.
Coming into the 2020 NFL season, the Washington Football Team had one goal in mind: Development. With 2019 first-round pick Dwayne Haskins under center, the Football Team’s QB situation went as wrong as it could go.
With a porous 1-3 start under center for Dwayne Haskins, the second-year player was benched and eventually cut before seasons end.
With Kyle Allen only making three starts before sustaining a season-ending leg injury, Washington called on ol’ reliable, Alex Smith.
Alex has been the model of consistency under center, but this instance was entirely different. Coming off of 17 leg surgeries with an injury that nearly took his life, Alex Smith eventually was the puzzle-solver for the Washington offense.
Sure this wasn’t Pro-Bowl Alex, but he’s been the only QB that has kept this offense afloat and in a position to win games. What’s missing now, is a quarterback who can transcend this offense and this team to the point that they aren’t so reliant on their defensive front so heavily.
What Smith has done, all things considered, is admirable. After everything he’s been through, he helped lead Washington to a division title at 7-9 despite having trouble moving on his sore right leg.
Though the team made the playoffs, they don’t look like a true threat to go on a deep run. With better QB play, this Washington team would be much better off and a solidified Super Bowl contender for years to come.
There are three trades this franchise can explore that can take this team to the next level. The asks from their quarterback of the future is simple. They’ll need to be consistent but they’ll also need the ability to uplift the offense and catapult this group to a formidable unit in 2021 and beyond.
With free agents like Dak Prescott, Cam Newton, Ryan Fitzpatrick, and Phillip Rivers all unrestricted free agents in ‘21, they won’t make this list. There are solidified starters who can certainly move the needle for this team who will likely be available in the trade market.
