With all of the commotion and excitement of a brand-spanking new quarterback addition to Louisville football’s locker room, you may have missed another player who has elected to leave the program to search for a home elsewhere.
Second year cornerback Marqui Lowery has reportedly entered the transfer portal after not seeing the field in 2020.
The former three-star out of Zebulon B. Vance high school in North Carolina was a late addition during the early signing period in 2019.
Which cornerbacks now make up the roster?
With the loss of Lowery, Louisville now has a projected six scholarship cornerbacks on the roster.
Chandler Jones, Jr.
Greedy Vance, Fr.
Kei’Trel Clark, So.
Derrick Edwards, Fr.
Kani Walker, Fr.
Jamel Starks, Fr.
Among those, only three of these players got meaningful snaps in 2020. Jones and Clark are consistently above average and great starters respectively. Vance got some snaps as a true freshman a year ago, but was not ready to play consistently due to lack of weight and strength.
The room is starting to thin out with Marlon Character declaring for the draft, Anthony Johnson transferring to ACC foe Virginia, and now an impending departure of Marqui Lowery.
While the key pieces are back, there are certainly notable depth concerns if one player goes down in this group. With the unexpected departures, corner likely turns into a big area of emphasis for the 2022 recruiting class.
First year players Derrick Edwards and Kani Walker are both early enrollees so it’s possible they could be prepared to play come the first week of the season. it just may be a bit earlier than expected.
The turnstile of the transfer portal continues to run through Louisville this offseason.
