LEXINGTON, Va. – VMI’s first-ever NCAA FCS playoff game is set. And it’s a very familiar foe.
The #12/#15 ranked Keydets will travel to Harrisonburg, Va. to take on James Madison University this Saturday afternoon, April 24. Kickoff will be 2 p.m.
VMI will take on a James Madison squad that finished 5-0 following a win over Richmond last Saturday in Harrisonburg.
VMI earned its postseason trip after Saturday’s 31-17 win over The Citadel which moved the Keydets to 6-1 and a successful defense of the Silver Shako trophy against its conference military rival. The afternoon also saw the program claim its first Southern Conference football title since 1977.
The Keydets gathered Sunday morning on the VMI post at Marshall Hall and the Center for Leadership and Ethics to watch the Sunday Selection Show on ESPNU and find out their playoff opponent. VMI head coach Scott Wachenheim was the only coach interviewed on-air by the Selection Show crew after the bracket was revealed.
“I think it’s great to play the best right off the bat and James Madison University is a traditional rivalry from the past and very close to home.” said Wachenheim. “I know both teams are excited to play each other and it should be a great game.”
This will be 14th meeting between the schools that first met in 1982. The teams last squared off in Harrisonburg in 2009.
The game will be carried on ESPN3.
